A Leg Up on Learning: Pre-K Kits Set Children on the Path to Success

It was the last day of preschool, and four-year-old Chloe bounced with a mix of excitement and a tiny bit of worry. She loved her teachers and friends, but the thought of “big school” in the fall felt like a giant, unknown adventure. Her preschool teacher, Ms. Jaworski, gathered the children for a special visitor. Just then, a friendly face from the Susquehanna County Library’s Outreach Team walked in, carrying a stack of brightly colored bags. “These are special gifts from the United Way of Susquehanna County,” the team member explained, “to help you get ready for Kindergarten!”

Chloe eagerly peered inside her bag. It wasn’t just a bag; it was a treasure chest! There were colorful worksheets with friendly letters and numbers, brand new crayons and markers that smelled faintly of a promise of creativity, flashcards with animals and their starting sounds, child-safe scissors, and a pristine sketch pad just waiting for her imagination. Her eyes widened as she pulled out even more: a small whiteboard, dry-erase markers, and a fun coloring book. “So much more!” she whispered, clutching her new bounty.

That summer, the Pre-K Literacy Kit became Chloe’s bridge between the familiar comfort of preschool and the exciting world of Kindergarten. Afternoons were filled with playful learning sessions with her grandmother, Nana Rose. Nana Rose, who sometimes worried about keeping Chloe engaged with learning outside of school, found the kit invaluable. The worksheets made practicing ABCs feel like a game, not a chore. They used the flashcards to sound out simple words, and Nana Rose patiently guided Chloe’s hand as she learned to hold the scissors properly, cutting out shapes from old magazines. Counting fruit for snack time became an exercise in number recognition, thanks to the counting worksheets.

These activities weren’t just about memorizing facts; they were about reinforcing the foundational skills Chloe had learned in preschool and making them stick. The kit, thoughtfully curated by the United Way and funded by NBT Bank, provided the perfect tools for Nana Rose to encourage Chloe’s fine motor skills, strengthen her letter and number recognition, and build her confidence. Chloe didn’t even realize she was “working”; she was just having fun learning with her Nana.

When the first day of Kindergarten finally arrived here in Montrose, Chloe walked into her classroom with a bright smile and a quiet sense of readiness. She recognized the letters on the classroom posters, confidently knew her numbers when asked, and held her scissors with ease during art time. Chloe wasn’t just entering Kindergarten; she was stepping in with a genuine “leg up,” seamlessly transitioning from preschool with the foundational skills and confidence she needed to thrive.

The United Way of Susquehanna County’s Pre-K Literacy Kit program is about more than just distributing supplies; it’s about empowering families, extending the learning environment beyond the classroom, and ensuring that every child has the best possible start to their educational journey. It’s about bridging that crucial gap between preschool and Kindergarten, turning apprehension into excitement and giving our youngest learners the confidence to succeed. This year we were able to distribute 289 Literacy Kits to our eager Pre-K graduates heading into kindergarten.
