Bringing Learning into Focus
The bright fluorescent lights of the school nurse’s office felt harsh, a stark contrast to the blurry world eight-year-old Lily had been navigating for months. Reading the whiteboard in class was a constant struggle, and even her favorite picture books had become a frustrating jumble of shapes. She’d tried to hide it, mumbling excuses when she couldn’t see the board, but her teacher, Ms. Evans, had noticed.
“Lily,” Ms. Evans had said gently, “I think it’s time we had your eyes checked.”
That’s how Lily found herself participating in the United Way of Susquehanna County’s “See to Succeed” program. In the 2024/25 school year, the program was a lifeline for 118 kids across the six school districts in Susquehanna County. For Lily, and 108 other students just like her, the need for glasses was clear.
Lily’s family, like many in the county, was underinsured. The cost of an eye exam and new glasses felt like an insurmountable barrier. But thanks to the United Way, that barrier was removed. They covered all costs for the 68% of participating students who, like Lily, were either uninsured or underinsured, ensuring that financial hardship wouldn’t stand in the way of a child’s clear vision and, more importantly, their education.
The day of her eye exam, Lily was a bundle of nerves and quiet excitement. She met Dr. Muckin from Northeast Eye Institute, whose kind smile immediately put her at ease. Dr. Muckin, and another dedicated team who traveled all the way from Hazleton Eye Specialists, worked tirelessly, patiently guiding each child through the process. They understood that for many of these kids, this was their first comprehensive eye exam, and they treated each one with respect and genuine care.

When the moment came to try on her new glasses, Lily blinked. Then she blinked again. The world snapped into focus with a clarity she’d never known. The intricate patterns on Dr. Muckin’s tie, the individual leaves on the tree outside the window, the tiny print on a poster across the room – it was all suddenly, wonderfully, clear. A wide grin spread across her face.
Back in class, the whiteboard was no longer a mystery. Lily eagerly participated, her hand shooting up with confidence. Reading became a joy, not a chore. The “See to Succeed” program didn’t just give Lily a pair of glasses; it gave her back her confidence, her ability to learn, and the joy of seeing the world in all its vibrant detail.
