Planned Giving

Give the Ultimate Gift to Change the Life of Someone in Need

You can make a significant difference in a child’s life through a legacy gift to the United Way of Susquehanna County. Below, we’ve laid out some ways you can share your blessings with others and support the people and causes important to you.

The overwhelming majority of planned gifts are the result of bequests. Some benefits of a bequest include receiving an estate tax charitable deduction, reducing the burden of taxes on your family, and leaving a lasting legacy that will make a difference. A simple provision in your Will or Trust may enable you to make significant contributions not otherwise possible during your lifetime.

Here are some of the ways to leave a bequest to the United Way of Susquehanna County:

  • Include a bequest to United Way of Susquehanna County in your will or revocable trust
  • Designate United Way of Susquehanna County as a full, partial or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account (IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or pension)
  • Name United Way of Susquehanna County as a full or partial beneficiary of your life insurance policy

If you have a loved one who cares deeply about helping children and families out of poverty, making a Memorial or Tribute Gift is a meaningful way to honor your loved one or to celebrate a special occasion while supporting United Way of Susquehanna County. Your gift will be a lasting honor to your loved one and make a difference in the lives of children and families in need.

Consider making a memorial gift:

    • For birthdays and special celebrations
    • For weddings and anniversaries
    • To thank a United Way staff member or volunteer
    • In lieu of flowers when a loved one passes away
    • For Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
    • To thank a friend

A gift by cash or check is the most common and easiest method for making a charitable contribution. If you itemize tax deductions on your tax return, the full value of your gift can be a tax deduction. Your contribution will enable us to keep fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in your community.

Take advantage of a simple and impactful way to benefit the United Way of Susquehanna County. The IRA rollover allows donors 70½ or older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to a qualified charity without having to pay income taxes. The IRS requires owners of IRAs to begin annual withdrawals from these accounts after they turn 72 years old. An IRA rollover gift can meet an IRA’s annual required minimum distribution and reduce taxable income. Click here to learn more.

A gift of securities, including your stocks and bonds, is an easy way to support the United Way of Susquehanna County. By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you may avoid paying capital gains tax that could otherwise be due if you sold these assets. Your broker can transfer your securities to United Way’s account prior to being sold to avoid capital gains taxation. Securities often provide greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equivalent value, particularly if they have a low cost basis. Click here to learn more.

A gift of your life insurance policy is an excellent way to make a gift to charity. If you have a life insurance policy that has outlasted its original purpose, consider making a gift of your insurance policy. For example, you may have purchased a policy to provide for minor children and they are now financially independent adults.
