United Way of Susquehanna County Makes Difficult Decision to Cancel 2021 Chocolate and Wine Festival

(New Milford, PA) It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that United Way of Susquehanna County (UWSC) announces the cancellation of this year’s Chocolate and Wine Festival (CWF), which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 in the heart of Montrose, PA.

“We know this will come as an enormous disappointment to the sponsors, vendors, and volunteers, and the community at large, who look forward each year to kick off spring and summer with a fun-filled community event”, said Kim Merithew, United Way of Susquehanna County Director of Corporate and Community Giving.

The decision to cancel this year’s event was made with great consideration. The uncertainty and unpredictability of the COVID-19 situation and public health restrictions and responses to the changing conditions are of great concern. The event requires a significant amount of time for planning with help from many, and under the current circumstances, it will not be feasible this year.  “Our primary concern is always the responsibility we feel towards all involved, including staff, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, entertainers, and festival-goers, to plan and provide a safe, community festival”, said Merithew.

United Way was poised to take over the event from the original event organizers in 2020, and was working closely with one of the event founders, Tom Follert and his incredible volunteer team. “The hand- off made sense to entrust this deep rooted local community event to an organization that has a shared commitment to giving back to non-profits and promote education and overall well-being for children and their families here in Susquehanna County”, said Follert.

For United Way of Susquehanna County, which is focused on helping children, families, and the entire regional community, the event is a perfect fit. Regrettably, as a result of the pandemic United Way had to cancel last year’s event and again this year.

“The fact that we cannot have the event means that United Way funded agencies counting on support will not benefit from it and urgent community needs will go unmet.  We would like to encourage all to consider a gift to the United Way of Susquehanna County in these difficult times so that we may continue to fund agencies and our work on behalf of children in need in the community”, said Merithew.

United Way of Susquehanna County remains dedicated to bringing this event back in full swing when public health conditions warrant it is safe.

We encourage you to continue supporting event sponsors and vendors who have invested and participated in this beloved community event for the past 12 years.

United Way looks forward with great optimism to bringing back the CWF in 2022. We will continue to help our community stay safe, informed, and connected.
